Webinar summary: In this webinar Silverlight MVP Brian Noyes will give a quick overview of what Prism is and what its feature set includes. He'll do a very quick review of what WCF RIA Services does,and will focus on how you can build a Silverlight Prism application and factor your functionality into modules while still making the RIA Services functionality available in multiple modules. Attendees will find out how to leverage the Repository pattern to pull all the RIA Services client side code into one place, expose the data from a Repository service that you can then pull into any scope in the application that wants to consume it.

WCF RIA Services makes it simple to query and update data from your Silverlight application, as well as invoke other functionality on the server side. But most examples show using it with the built-in support for directly querying Entity Framework domain models where the entity classes are code generated for you.

In this webinar, Brian explains how you can mix WCF RIA Services with the new Code First features of Entity Framework 4, or just get your data from somewhere else such as flat files, but still benefit from the power of RIA Services for the client side.

Then he did a quick walk through creating a sample SQL Azure database, a service you can call to the database with, and how to incorporate that data within your Windows Phone applications utilizing the Telerik RadControls for Windows Phone 7.

In this webinar Brian Noyes explains how to secure both the server and client sides of your application. He demonstrates how your Silverlight application can join a secure session of a hosting web site or set up its own security context by logging in the user from the app. Next Brian goes onto how to use a RIA Services authentication domain service even if you are not using any other features of RIA services to perform user authentication and get roles and identity information back to the client to perform client side authorization such as disabling features based on the rights of the individual user. Finally, the webinar explains how to add user-specific settings and preferences and have easy access to those on the client side and persistence on the server side.

Silverlight 2 Data Form - Episode 8: Client Storage

Sometimes the video might not be available because of some internal problems of the Silverlight streaming services. Please excuse us for the inconvience, we hope that this problem will be fixed very soon.

This is the 8 video by Ken Cox about the development of CRUD application using Silverlight and Visual Basic.NET.

In Episode 8, we continue working with the AutoCompleteBox control that we implemented in Episode 7. This time, we fetch a long list of country names as XML from a third-party Web service, cache the file on the client using isolated storage, and harness LINQ to XML to retrieve the country names. One of the considerations is checking Silverlight's access to the remote data. Finally, you learn how to use (and re-use) a static resource within XAML markup.
I'm currently collecting topics for a ninth episode. My intention is to make it a bug fix screencast based on feedback, so send in those reports! It will likely also cover usability issues like implementing tabs and tooltips.
Make sure you've worked through Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3, Episode 4, Episode 5, Episode 6 and Episode 7 first.

Video: Silverlight 2 Data Form - Episode 6: 'C' is for Create

This is the sixth of 8 videos by Ken Cox about the development of CRUD application using Silverlight and Visual Basic.NET.

In this episode, you build a XAML form that acts like a popup, modal window. The form validates user input with WCF callbacks to ensure that the customer ID is unique. By the end of the episode, you're able to add a customer to the NorthWind database using Silverlight, VB, ADO.NET Data Services and the Entity Framework. Here's a reminder: this series is sequential. If you haven't worked through the first five episodes, you'll find this one tough sledding because of the prerequisites.

Make sure you've worked through Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3, Episode 4 and Episode 5 first.

Episode 5: "D" is for Delete probes data associations, properties and links in the Entity Framework. It takes you step by step through the code to delete a customer, the customer's orders, and the order details. I hope you find it worthwhile.

Make sure you've worked through Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3, and Episode 4 first. Without them, you won't have the prerequisite code or project infrastructure to succeed in this episode.

Check out the first of 8 videos by Ken Cox about the development of CRUD application using Silverlight and Visual Basic.NET.

The tasks shown include: Creating the Silverlight project, adding the database, setting up the ADO.NET Entity data model, and implementing an ADO.NET data service.

The demo is a small, but realistic example of how to create a CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) application against the familiar Northwind database. It uses the latest stuff from Microsoft including Windows Communication Foundation, ADO.NET Data Services (Astoria), and the Entity Framework.
