The more I use it, the more I like it. But I also get better understanding why it is wrong. This article explains the pillars very nicely, it must be easy to see what is wrong with the three of them.

Be digital. It means that if I have an object, I must be able to create, delete, edit, clone, save, and restore. If anything is missing, sorry, it is not digital. If I have linked objects, I should clearly see if that is a tree, a net, a linked list, or whatever and navigate in a standard way. If I have a collection, I must be able to search, group, fold, filter, save and restore searches and filters, and be notified when the search results alter (MS moves in this direction very slowly and, unfortunately, not recognizing that as a pillar). If I change the size of a screen (or a window!) the content must adopt, and if there are several ways to adopt, the choice must be a global setting (once again, very slow movement here, but not related to Metro pillars). The Metro way of being digital is just an attempt to avoid being skeuomorphic by, funny enough, imitating a sheet of paper with primitive typography.

Do more with less. Perfect idea. Unfortunately, less means less visual clues and less connections between elements. If it was possible to do everything with relatively little, ribbon would never be invented. This pillar is actually a confirmation of the sad fact that some things just cannot be done on a slate. The Metro answer is simple: if advanced, ditch your ARM and go x86 with classical desktop. Doing more with less can move the boundary a bit, nothing more.

Be fast and fluid. Yes, if there is no other choice, you'd better be fast and fluid. Unfortunately, the fastest navigation is done by simply turning eyes. Having less elements on the screen means more levels of navigation and less interaction between elements. This can be partially compensated by being fast and fluid. The loss of context associated with the Metro ways of navigation cannot be compensated at all.

This said, I guess the "create your apps with simplicity in mind" also means "do not attempt to create that which is inherently over complex for Metro".
http://www.silverlightshow.net/items/Windows-8-Metro-Create-your-apps-with-simplicity-in-mind.aspx#comment7817 Octagon http://www.silverlightshow.net/items/Windows-8-Metro-Create-your-apps-with-simplicity-in-mind.aspx Sun, 08 Apr 2012 09:57:48 GMT
