Telerik, a leading vendor of developer tools and user interface components for .NET, is proud to present the Q1 2009 release of its RadControls for Silverlight. The new volume features the official release of RadGridView, RadDocking, RadChart, RadMaskedTextBox, RadToolBar and 3 more controls.

“Optimizing the different aspects of performance has always been among our first priorities,” said Nikolay Atanasov, Silverlight Team Unit Manager. “To that end, we are introducing 3 new techniques to significantly reduce page loading time and to provide better user experience.”

The unique RadCompression module compresses the entire Web Service traffic in a completely codeless manner, resulting in smaller data transfer and better performance of the application. With the asynchronous databinding of Telerik Silverlight Grid, the application is responsive even while loading a large dataset. Finally, thanks to the direct data operations developers no longer need to wrap data in collection views in order to perform sorting, grouping and filtering.

Other important new features of the Silverlight grid are the Excel-like filtering and frozen columns. What is more, end-users can now export data to Word, Excel and CSV with just a few clicks. Another addition to the control is the Masked TextBox editor with support for DateTime masks, Numeric masks, as well as a set of commonly used masks.

Bridging the gap between desktop and web environments is a core strategy of Telerik. That’s why Telerik Silverlight Grid is a mirror counterpart of RadGridView for WPF, sharing the same codebases and API, which guarantees synchronized future development.

With the increasing need for more sophisticated data visualization applications, the Telerik Silverlight team is working hard in this direction. Featuring everything from a super powerful grid, to animated, fully customizable Silverlight charts and Gauges, Telerik Controls for Silverlight transform various business scenarios into interactive, animated visuals that enable end users to analyze complex data. What’s more, Telerik is building a 3D engine for Silverlight, which will first be implemented in the Silverlight Charts with the Q2 2009 release.

The new volume of RadControls for Silverlight will also includes the official release of RadColorPicker, RadHtmlPlaceHolder and a CTP release of RadEditor for Silverlight.

Telerik, a leading vendor of developer tools and user interface components for .NET announced the work in progress on its own Silverlight 2 3D engine. The 3D engine will be first implemented in the upcoming RadChart for Silverlight. The new 3D functionality, together with the animated, fully customizable RadGauge and RadChart, empower enterprise application developers to rapidly create high performing, interactive, and powerful Business Intelligence applications.

The unique Telerik 3D engine for Silverlight 2 will make changing of perspective and lightning possible, pushing the boundaries of the data visualization capabilities of RadControls for Silverlight.
Being based on Microsoft’s Silverlight technology, Telerik 3D RadChart for Silverlight will allow developers to seamlessly integrate the control’s capabilities into compelling rich data visualization Silverlight applications.
Telerik RadChart for Silverlight is expected to be released with Q1 2009, in the beginning of March 2009. Q1 2009 will be a milestone release for RadControls for Silverlight, featuring the official release of RadGridView, RadDocking, RadChart and Masked TextBox for Silverlight, as well as RadEditor for Silverlight CTP. The 3D capabilities of RadChart will be officially implemented with the Q2 release of RadControls for Silverlight in midsummer.

What is a Pivot table/grid? According to Wikipedia it is a data summarization tool found in spreadsheet applications. Still when I was a child I learned that people understand the best when they see an example.

Consider you have a table that contains the nutrition of given food, say a pizza:

    Group Name Quantity
    Carbohydrates Total carbohydrates 27.3
    Carbohydrates Total disaccharides 5.7
    Carbohydrates Total polysaccharides 21.6
    Minerals Calcium 147
    Minerals Phosphorus 150
    Minerals Potassium 201
    Minerals Copper 0.13
    Minerals Magnesium 19
    Minerals Sodium 582
    Minerals Selenium 4
    Minerals Total iron 0.7
    Minerals Zinc 1.07
    Vitamins Beta-carotene 173.8
    Vitamins Nicotinic 1.5
    Vitamins Total vitamin B6 0.127
    Vitamins Total vitamin D 0.3
    Vitamins Total vitamin E 2.1
    Vitamins Vitamin B1 0.1
    Vitamins Vitamin B12 0.59
    Vitamins Vitamin B2 0.16
    Vitamins Vitamin C 10

In the data above you see that every nutrition is contained in a specific Group - 3 groups and 21 nutrition in total.

Telerik, one of the most active component vendors in the last years, have already released a couple of Silverlight components. Read on what they share with us about the components we can expect, problems they faced and more.

    1.       How does the component development for Silverlight 1.1 go?
It is going very well. We are working on several key UI controls now and a preview will be available within a couple of months.

    2.       What difficulties are you facing?
Silverlight 1.1 is still in alpha and a lot of things are still shaky. Some base functionality is still missing and we are facing some performance issues.

    3.       What do you think about the Silverlight as a technology? Is it (or will it be) really a Flash-killer as it has been written in many blogs?
We are very enthusiastic about Silverlight and believe it will bring in a lot of interactivity and richness previously unavailable in websites.
