    One of the drawbacks of using Siverlight or Flash (or any other plugin based platform) is that the users have to download a plugin and install it before be able to see your application.

    Tim Sneath posted a few tips that can help you greatly improve the user experience for the first-time control installation.

    Also Microsoft put up a package with a whitepaper as well as two samples that illustrate best practices. Download the package from here.
