  • Plug-ins and composite applications in Silverlight – pt 3

Chris Klug is back with the third and final post about extension/plug-in loading in Silverlight.

I have previously showed how to it manually here and then how to do it "automatically" using MEF here. Both these have some upsides. The custom solution is tiny from a download perspective and offers a lot of control. MEF on the other hand automates a few pieces of the solution, still offering a lot of manual control. The download size does however grow a lot compared to the benefits gained. So, so far, I would say that the custom way is the winner. At least as long as the requirements are as simple as they are in this case...

Vincent Leung has posted a few screencasts that he thinks might be useful when creating Silverlight composite applications using Prism.

Prism can be thought of as a set of libraries that help Silverlight applications be scalable and testable. It has a number of features (modularity, view regions and commanding) that help with this. This guide shows you how to get started writing a Prism application in Silverlight. It shows how to use the bootstrappers, modules, catalogs, regions and commanding.

Damian Schenkelman has published some code snippets that come with "guidance".

This is great, but Julian had an idea that I believe will make the code snippets we created even more useful. He said: “What if we not only provide the code snippets, but we also add some guidance, links and tips based on our experience as Prism developers, that will help others with these common tasks”. Matias, Ezequiel and me thought this was a great idea, specially for people starting with Prism. The guidance offered in the snippets will provide insight about how Prism works, leading to better and faster development. This guidance can simply be deleted once the code is put into place as it is just composed of code comments.
