If one feature is important when it comes to building line-of-business applications, it certainly is validation of business rules. At all levels throughout the application, we need to validate that the data that is entered by the users to verify that it meets the requirements. Some basic validation can be done by the database itself, but most (and in many cases, all) data that it trying to make its way to the database should be validated up front in order not to end up with corrupted data within the data store.

    Introduction

For its data needs, Silverlight needs to connect to a service. Since Silverlight is a client-side technology, services are the way for Silverlight to get to data that resides on the server. In the current release, there is no support for any ADO.NET related functionality (so no DataReaders, DataSets and no LINQ-To-SQL). That means we can’t connect from Silverlight to a database available on some server by simple using a connection string and creating a connection from the Silverlight client.

Once the trees start coloring red and yellow, fall is in the air and that means another edition of TechEd Europe is taking place as well. For the second time in a row, the largest conference for Microsoft developers and IT professionals was organized in Berlin, Germany. For me personally, this was the fourth time I attended TechEd. While TechEd is not a developer-only conference anymore (some years ago, the event was split in a week developer-only and IT-Pro only), there’s a good amount of developer-content to be found.

Real-world Silverlight: things you *will* encounter when building Silverlight applications
Once you start building real-world Silverlight applications, things may start to get a bit more complicated than in the demos. How do you start a complete application? Do you just start coding or do you first think about what you are going to build and how you are going to build it? Should you think about architecture? In this webinar, we’ll look at some common questions developers have when building real world Silverlight applications. More specifically, the following topics will be discussed:

    1. SketchFlow
    2. WCF RIA Services
    3. Data binding & DataGrid
    4. MVVM
    5. MEF
    6. Commanding & behaviors
    7. Messaging, navigation & dialogs
    8. Custom controls & third party controls
    9. OOB
    10. Printing

Note that Data binding and MEF were already covered in previous webinars (recording of webinar on Data Binding, recording of webinar on MEF), so these topics will only be touched upon briefly in this webinar.
