Mike Taulty has created a Silverlight application that makes it so much easier to download PowerPoint presentations and videos from the official PDC 2010 site.

    I was struggling a little on the official PDC 2010 site to download all of the PowerPoints and videos I wanted and I scratched my head for a while before I found an OData feed which looked like it contained all the data I needed. That feed is at;

    http://odata.microsoftpdc.com/

and I figured it wouldn’t be too much hassle to plug that into a Silverlight application that made it easier to do the downloading. I spent maybe a day on it during the rainy bits of the weekend and that application is running in the browser below and you should be able to click the button to install it locally.

  • Bob Muglia on Silverlight and PDC

In this post, Bob Muglia apologizes for the confusion that he caused with his interview about Silverlight during the PDC conference.

    Source: Silverlight Team Blog

During the conference, I gave an interview where, among other things, I talked about the great work we’re doing with Silverlight – in particular, support for Windows Phone 7, which we featured heavily at the conference. The interview was accurately reported. I understand that what I said surprised people and caused controversy and confusion. As this certainly wasn’t my intent, I want to apologize for that. I’d like to use this post to expand on what I said, and talk about the very important role Silverlight has going forward.

After the post “Microsoft: Our strategy with Silverlight has shifted” made on ZDNet.com, there was a panic online about the Microsoft strategy on Silverlight and lots of people continue to blog about that:

    • Silverlight *versus* HTML5? Really?
    • Silverlight is dead. Long live Silverlight!
    • Is Silverlight Dead? Answer is “No, don’t be panic”
    • And they lived happily ever after: Silverlight is here to stay (Part 2)

In this show, Erik Mork talks about the Microsoft’s PDC Conference and the announcements that have been made there.

Erik thought it was weird that there weren’t any *big* announcements at the conference. There were some Azure announcments, but they hardly seemed to justify the conference. This is just bizarre.

Microsoft didn’t talk about Silverlight on the desktop (they did talk a lot about Silverlight on the phone…), and the conclusion drawn was that Silverlight on the desktop is… ready for this? Dead. Or maybe not.

Here is the article of Mary Jo Foley that provoked so many discussions and reflections about the future of Silverlight.

    Source: ZDNet

“Silverlight is our development platform for Windows Phone,” he said. Silverlight also has some “sweet spots” in media and line-of-business applications, he said.

But when it comes to touting Silverlight as Microsoft’s vehicle for delivering a cross-platform runtime, “our strategy has shifted,” Muglia told me.

Silverlight will continue to be a cross-platform solution, working on a variety of operating system/browser platforms, going forward, he said. “But HTML is the only true cross platform solution for everything, including (Apple’s) iOS platform,” Muglia said.
