Here is one really nice tutorial in which Mark Wilson-Thomas demonstrates how to build a simple data forms application using Silverlight, VS 2010 and WCF RIA Services.

The final release of Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010 has recently shipped. Silverlight 4 Tools brings together Visual Studio 2010, Silverlight 4 and WCF RIA Services 1.0. This great combination of runtime and tooling makes it easier than ever to build LOB applications using Silverlight. In this walkthrough, I'll demonstrate this by using the Silverlight 4 tools to create a simple master-details product catalog application that reads and writes data from a SQL Server database.

This blog post of Karl Shifflett is a proof-of-concept for Non-Linear Navigation in Silverlight 4 Navigation Applications.

I first heard about Non-Linear Navigation in this dnrTV video that Billy Hollis did.  While on a cruise to Alaska I wrote the BBQ Shack application, which is a WPF implementation of Non-Linear Navigation.

Non-Linear Navigation is one way for Silverlight line of business applications to provide users with a desktop application like experience.  This would include both in-browser and out-of-browser applications.

  • Recent Silverlight-related Releases

Max Paulousky has a list with several important Silverlight-related releases that have been announced lately.

Microsoft has published a great control to visualize enormous arrays of data. This control allows filtering, sorting, re-arranging of objects by one mouse click. Some people says it is the revolution in the data visualization [...]

Microsoft has announced the general availability of Silverlight for the Symbian platform. This platform is available for  Nokia N60, Nokia 5800 XPressMusic and Nokia N97 models. Unfortunately, developers should use Silverlight 2 as a platform for development.

  • XAML Power Toys for Visual Studio 2010 for Cider version 2.1 Silverlight 4 Support

Karl Shifflett has just updated XAML Power Toys for Visual Studio 2010 for Cider to version 2.1 adding support for Silverlight 4.

I have two XAML Power Toys products on my blog.  They are not the same.  Get both, you’ll be glad you did. The first one is for working in the XAML Editor and to create ViewModel’s. The second one works with the Cider Designer.  This is post is about this product.

  • A Sliver of Silverlight on ActiveTuts

Mike Taulty has a couple of little Silverlight tutorials up on the ActiveTuts site.

I certainly don’t claim that they’re comprehensive in any way, shape or form – just me making some use of Silverlight 4, the Bing Maps control, Visual Studio 2010 and a little bit of Expression Blend 4 to put something together.

I’m hoping to revisit with more explanation around some of the things that drop out of that tutorial if enough folks show interest in Silverlight on a site that’s about RIA but which is primarily (or entirely Smile) about Flash, ActionScript and Flex up until now so I’m very pleased to be able to put a little tiny sliver of Silverlight amongst those techs.

  • XAPs Minifier. Avoiding Problem With Multiple Startup Objects

0 comments  /  posted by  Silverlight Show  on  Jul 05, 2010 (4 days ago)
Max Paulousky decided to add additional check into his XAPs Minifier to find out whether application has particular startup objects or not.

As mentioned in my previous post, the add-on can generate error if it finds more than one Startup Objects in a solution. Usually, it happens when developers add new Xap file via adding new Silverlight project (File-New-Project-Silverlight Application). They delete App.xaml file but do not clear Startup Object in the project properties and it is not cleared automatically.

Damian Schenkelman announces that the Prism Training Kit he and Matias Bonaventura created has been released.

Over the last week, Matias and I took some time to work on something a Prism Training Kit. We figured out that was one of the things that would be useful to learn Prism. Therefore, we decided to create a set of Hands on Labs that cover the basic topics addressed by Prism (if you can’t wait to download the TK, go here).

In this article, Bilal Haidar explains how to get started using Windows Phone 7 Series to build a Silverlight 3.0 mobile application using Visual Studio 2010.

Throughout this article you will be introduced to preparing an environment for WP7 application development with Silverlight, a summary of features and functionality available in the WP7 application platform, and finally a sample "Hello World" application using both WP7 and Silverlight.

Karl Shifflett just posted a comprehensive article on Sample Data in the Visual Studio 2010 WPF and Silverlight Designer.

Developers using a visual Designer use sample data to light up their UI at design-time; to cause the Designer to render like it will at run-time. This time saving feature is especially important when designing DataTemplates or adjusting the layout of a DataGrid since the developer will not have to actually run the application to see what it will render like with data.

  • Calling WCF Services in Silverlight 4

In this article for the Visual Studio Magazine, Kathleen Dollard explores the WCF service boundary after upgrading sample applications to Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4.

My recent column, "Adding WCF Services to Silverlight" (March 2010), focused on the overall Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) structure, not on aspects of the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) service boundary. This month, I'll revisit that sample and refactor the Silverlight/WCF bounder.
