Following his article on IE9 and Windows 7 integration, in this one Laurent Duveau explains how you could go further by controlling an IE9 hosted Silverlight video from Windows 7 taskbar.

    Source: Laurent Duveau

If you have IE9 on Windows 7, you can try a live demo by visiting www.runatserver.com and dragging the browser tab to your taskbar, then select “Connected Experience” from the JumpList. (I explain how to create such a list in my previous article).

  • A tool to help diagnose problems setting up your PivotViewer app

If you are running into a handful of common configuration problems with your application, server, or the collection content when trying to use PivotViewer, then you have to check this tool made by Andrew Cox which will help you diagnose these problems.

The collection and application need to be hosted on a web server (even the Visual Studio development web server that VS starts up to run your Silverlight apps will do just fine). You'll also need at least .net 3.5 installed to run the application.

Mike Ormond is happy to announce that the Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta release is now here and is available for download.

The release notes are available here. A couple of things to point out:

    • Expression Blend for Windows Phone is now part of the install
    • It's now possible to unlock a device (if you're fortunate enough to have one) and to deploy XAP files directly to it
    • There are a number of breaking changes to the API but it's getting close to baked. You can see a full rundown here

Here are some more post about this release:

    • Windows Phone CTP vs Windows Phone Beta
    • Windows Phone 7 Tools Beta Available for Download by Alex Golesh
    • Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta Released by the Expression Blend Team

Andy Wigley has published part 2 of his series on the Windows Embedded Silverlight Tools (WEST).

In this series of posts, I explain how you can use a Silverlight for Windows Embedded (SWE) UI but write all your application logic using C# or Visual Basic. In the first post, you can find the example code and links to the slides and video recording of the session I delivered at Tech Ed North America 2010, In this post, I will walk through using the Windows Embedded Silverlight Tools to create a native executable, then in the next posts I will convert the native exe to a dll, export some functions from it and then control the UI from managed code.

In this post, Laurent Duveau talks about the Telerik Assembly Minifier which helps you to reduce the size of your Silverlight xap and he gives a good example on how to use this tool.

If you are using Silverlight controls from the Telerik suite, you’re going to love this.

Telerik provide a new free tool to help reduce the size of your Silverlight xap. The Telerik Assembly Minifier can be found here: http://minifier.telerik.com/

If you’ve run into some trouble installing the latest version of the Windows Phone Developer Tools from http://developer.windowsphone.com we’re here to help!

Specifically one issue with installing the Windows Phone Developer Tools with Silverlight already installed on your machine is coming up more and more, luckily Aaron Stebner has provided a great post on working around the issue.

The purpose of Jesse Liberty in this post is to show you the benefits of adding Expression Blend to your toolkit. Find out what are the reasons for which you should learn how to use Blend as soon as possible.

Okay, tough love: if you are serious about Silverlight development, the days of using one Integrated Development Environment for all you work are…. over.  The benefits of adding Expression Blend to your toolkit, and getting serious about learning how to use it well are so overwhelming that you can no longer afford to ignore them.

Jesse Liberty has collected some good resources for those of you who intend to get started with Silverlight.

I often receive email saying, more or less, “I am starting Silverlight, can you tell me what to read first.”

We are working hard on creating a path through all the material for Getting Started.
