SilverlightShow Page for all Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 (WP7) things on Twitter

In this third part, Mike Taulty explains how to call some data services and get some real live data onto the screen.

The application hasn’t shown any data yet and so in this post I’ll start trying to get some data onto the screen. Specifically, I’ll look to get the tracks view and the sessions view built albeit with a default UI that will need a lot of styling at a later point.

Here are the previous parts of this series:

    • Rebuilding the PDC 2010 Silverlight Application (Part 1)
    • Rebuilding the PDC 2010 Silverlight Application (Part 2)

SilverlightShow Page for all Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 (WP7) things on TwitterFollowing his previous post, Mike Taulty wanted to have a MainView on the application that knows whether the app is in the browser, out-of-browser and/or elevated.

Ultimately, this app is going to call the PDC OData service at a domain that does not have a client access policy file allowing cross-domain calls and I’m only going to get that working from an out-of-browser elevated application so my functionality in the browser is going to be purely around offering the user the chance to install the app out of browser.

SilverlightShow Page for all Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 (WP7) things on TwitterMike Taulty decided to rebuild his PDC 2010 Silverlight Application with which you can download videos from the 2010 PDC.

One of the things that I really wasn’t pleased about with that application is that it all downloads as one huge XAP file and yet I’m a huge fan of MEF and hadn’t used it in the interests of time. So, I’d really rather have a solution that involves MEF and break the application into a set of modules that are dynamically loaded at runtime rather than all bundled into a big XAP.

This, then, is the first post around starting to put this together and in this post I’ll build zero application functionality but, instead, purely focus on getting the infrastructure together that I’m going to need later on in the application.

A week ago a colleague of mine posted an interesting article on parallelism in .NET 4.0 which included a few different libraries for asynchronous / parallel processing. Being a bit of a Linq fan, the Reactive Extensions jumped out at me.

SilverlightShow Page for all Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 (WP7) things on TwitterJoe McBride introduces you to his new invoice built entirely in Silverlight.

    Source: Joe McBride's Blog

For a while now I’ve been wanting to make invoicing my clients a much less painful process. A major aspect of any project is sending an invoice to the client throughout the duration of the project. The last few years I’ve used a few different products and none of them really seemed to encompass either the simplicity I needed, or the user experience I wanted. I want to enjoy invoicing for my work! So, to that end …
