  • Silverlight, Bing Maps and Vectors

0 comments  /  posted by  Silverlight Show  on  Jan 14, 2010 (5 months ago)

Mike Taulty was looking for an example of how Silverlight content is drawn with vectors and he found something good at Bing Maps.

If you haven’t seen the Bing Maps beta with Silverlight & PhotoSynth and all that goodness then read this post from Chris and then go and check it out although I warn you that it can eat quite a bit of time once you get playing with it. Anyway, back to vectors. It’s easy to see the “vector effect” on Bing Maps by just zooming the browser up to 200% or 400% where you can see the quality of the fonts and UI elements.

  • 56 Vector Arrows In XAML

Laurent Bugnion found this collection of vector arrows through Robby Ingebretsen. The designer Sander Baumann created 56 different arrows in vector format (Adobe Illustrator).

I converted these arrows in XAML. The arrows are available in the different formats:

    • DrawingBrush (WPF only): You can use the arrow icon as a brush to “paint” an element, typically a Rectangle. If the painted element is resized, the DrawingBrush will also resize seamlessly thanks to its vector nature.
    • Paths (Silverlight and WPF): In some cases, it is more convenient to use a Path instead of a DrawingBrush.
  • Improved HitTest Method for Silverlight 3

In this blog post, Andy Beaulieu enhances the collision detection to handle both Vector graphics and Raster graphics in Silverlight 3.

Looking at the demo code, one of the main routines is the CheckCollisionPoint class, which does a HitTest on a UI Element at a specific Point. If the element is an Image, then a WriteableBitmap object is used to check the specific pixel point (this WriteableBitmap is created in the CheckCollision method, shown later.). If the element is not an image, then we assume it is Vector based and we use the VisualTreeHelper class for a hit test.

Alex Knight has posted a few useful tips and tricks when working with vectors in Expression Design.

Shine is the oldest vector trick going around but it can add an element of realism to any graphic and it’s ever so easy.
There are a few different types on shine you can add to an object, the first is a flat shine, add this to your logos and other object to give a flat yet glass appeal.

Frank La Vigne will show you how to use Microsoft Office Clip Art.

In my last post, I covered using WikiPedia as a clip art source for your Silverlight/WPF Apps. Now, I'll show you how to use Microsoft Office Clip Art.

Frank La Vigne will explain you how to grab vector graphics from WikiPedia for use in your Silverlight or WPF projects.

Everybody is familiar with WikiPedia, but not a lot of people know that much of its content is licensed under creative commons and that the site prefers to use SVG for many of its graphics and diagrams.
