In this episode of Silverlight TV, Kenny Young of the Expression Blend team demonstrates how to create some impressive interactions with the help of Expression Blend 4 for Silverlight 4.

He demonstrates some great examples using the FluidMoveBehavior, FluidLayout, LayoutStates, Transition Effects, and sample data. Kenny then dives in and creates several of these interactions from scratch, showing exactly how easy it is to use Blend 4 to create rich Silverlight experiences.

John Papa has created a simple plugin named “Sticky” for his Seesmic Desktop.
Feel free to use this plugin as you like. It is a simple plug in that shows information about the Twitter user right inline with the Tweet. This post will explain what the Sticky plugin does and of course I’ll share the plugin with you. I’ll follow up with another post to explain how to create a plugin using the Seesmic Desktop platform, Visual Studio 2010, and Expression Blend.

Adam also shows how to create a custom behavior using code. Don't miss this episode as Adam discusses how behaviors can make the UI developer's job much easier.

  • Updates for the Silverlight Training Kit

John Papa announces that the Silverlight Training Kit has been updated with some new content and fixes.

We have had a good response to the free 8 module Silverlight Training Kit we released on Channel 9 back at MIX and that Scott Guthrie announced. We have since updated at the Silverlight 4 Launch with some new content and fixes. We’ve also found 2 issues since then that you might run across. I’ve corrected these in the source and will update them on the Channel 9 site in our next round (which I hope to include VB version of the courseware, too!)

The final releases of the Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio and WCF RIA Services are now available for download. Take a look at the original posts of John Papa and Tim Heuer. The final version of the 3 new application themes that they developed are now also available.

This morning we published the final release of the Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio and WCF RIA Services.  In April, when Silverlight 4 was released, the tools were still in “RC” status.  Today, they are no longer and are officially released.  There is no new update to Silverlight itself, but these tools are the final bits of this version.

In this episode of Silverlight TV, John Papa meets with Deepesh Mohnani from the WCF RIA Services team who demonstrates how to expose various endpoints from WCF RIA Services.

ImageThis is a great explanation and walk through of how to open RIA Services domain services to clients, including:

    • Silverlight clients (of course)
    • Creating an OData endpoint and showing how Excel can use it
    • Creating a SOAP endpoint to a domain service and using it from a Windows Phone 7 application
    • Creating a JSON endpoint and having an AJAX application talk to it

In this post John Papa explains how to bind a ComboBox to a collection of objects, and then bind a property from the selected object to some other scalar property.

The key here are the DisplayMemberPath and SelectedValuePath properties. These apply to the object that each item in the ComboBox is bound to. In other words, these properties are set to the State, not the ObservableCollection<State>. Also, notice these properties are not data bound, they are instead set to the name of the properties respectively. We do not want the values of the properties here, we want the actual name of the properties (which is why it is called DisplayMemberPath and SelectedValuePath).

In this video, Adam Kinney explains what the PathListBox is and why it is so compelling. Then, he demonstrates several ways of using it in creative examples.

The PathListBox is one of the newest features available in Expression Blend and Silverlight 4. It redefines how users look at lists of data as it breaks the mold of a list "box" and opens the possibilities to use any shape or path. Don't miss this episode and be sure to download Adam's sample code.
