  • Silverlight and Security Documentation

Cheryl, who owns the security node for the Silverlight documentation on MSDN, has created a security topic for Silverlight 4 release. She saw the need for that following an article concluding that Adobe has put the most effort into security and documenting secure practices.

Recently, there was an article in EWeek about the various platforms for Rich Internet Application (RIA) development, including Silverlight. It was an interesting article but one thing I found a bit worrisome is the author’s conclusion that Adobe has put the most effort into security and documenting secure practices. I own the security node for the Silverlight documentation on MSDN, which means that although I don’t own the feature-specific security concerns, I am responsible for pulling all these pieces together in a coherent way. As part of this charter, for the Silverlight 4 release I created a security topic based largely on a security whitepaper written by Nick, a PM for Silverlight. I worked with Nick to create this topic and it was reviewed by the Silverlight security team.

Sam Landstrom announces that Silverlight 3 and Silverlight 4 are now covered in the same set of MSDN documentation and gives you some tips on how to find version-specific information.

    Source: Silverlight SDK

There is quite a bit of overlap between developing for Silverlight 3 and Silverlight 4 and so in order to not duplicate content in different locations on the web, both versions are covered in the same set of MSDN documentation.

Sam Landstrom has just uploaded new versions of offline and online Silverlight 4 MSDN documentation.

The offline CHM is great for fast offline access and best of all, it's just Silverlight docs. You won't get any other technologies mixed up in your search results, index, etc.

Wolf Schmidt announces that the MSDN Online documentation for Silverlight 4 is now live.

If you have been looking at the documentation for the last 6 months or so, you may be used to seeing two entries in the MSDN Table of Contents at this spot: one for Silverlight 3, one for Silverlight 4 (Beta or RC). Now, there is just a single "Silverlight" node.

Generally the information in documentation is written as it applied to Silverlight 4. In cases where there is a difference in behavior if you are still targeting Silverlight 3, the difference is often called out in a separate section of the topic. Or in some cases there are entirely separate topics for a subject area as it applies to Silverlight 3.

In this article published on MSDN, you can find how to deal with those pesky WCF CommunicationException “NotFound” errors in Silverlight.

Silverlight version 4 enables support for the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) SOAP fault programming model, which allows the service to communicate error conditions to the client. In previous versions of Silverlight, if an error occurred on the service, it would register as an HTTP 500 response code and details about the error would not be accessible to the Silverlight client.
