In this article, Mahesh Sabnis explores the mechanism of communicating with the local SQL Database using the out-of-browser features of Silverlight 4 with elevated trust permissions.

I started my carrier as a VB 6.0 Developer 12 yrs ago. During this period, I used to work with ADO (the data access technology during that time) for accessing data and performing CRUD operations. It’s been a long time since then. Now I use the latest .NET technologies for various types of application development and training. Currently I am using Silverlight 4.0 which contains some fantastic features like COM enhancement programming.

Andrej Tozon has published the sample application and the slide deck from his talk at the Bleeding Edge conference.

On this year’s Bleeding Edge conference I had a talk on debugging with my fellow SQL Server MVP. While he covered some common pitfalls developers make on the SQL Server side, I focused on the Silverlight side of development and debugging:

    • possible issues with application deployment
    • options and strategies for returning WCF faults with Silverlight 3
    • using windbg with Silverlight application to track its execution
    • finding data binding failures and memory leaks

In this post Jesse Liberty concentrates on the powerful Linq To Sql technology.

In a previous post I discussed the advantage of separating the Data Access Layer (retrieving data from your data store) from the Data Transport Layer (moving data from the server to your client.  We then took a small but important detour into an introduction to  Linq.  This posting will expand upon Linq sufficient to allow a good understanding of how we’ll be using Linq in the rest of the project.

In this project Jesse Liberty explores, among other things, getting data into and out of a SQL Database.

In fact, we’ll explore a number of ways of doing so. To get started, however, we need to create a database that is sufficient for the project and sufficiently illustrative of working with relational databases, without being overly complex.

Fortunately, the project requirements are of about the right complexity.
