Andy Beaulieu is happy to find out that Silverlight 4 introduces GPU Acceleration to Perspective 3D Transforms.
Perspective 3D Transforms were originally introduced in Silverlight 3, and allow 2D visual elements to be rotated in 3D space.[...] The problem in Silverlight 3 was that PlaneProjection’s were rendered using software instead of the video card (GPU), so you could quickly peg the CPU if you overused this transform effect.

  • Swivel Behavior in Silverlight 3

Read this post of John Papa and find out how to turn a swivel effect into a behavior.

A while back I created a pair of Storyboards that make a pair of panels swivel to show a front side and a back side. The key ingredients in the storyboards are:

    • Plane Projection using Perspective 3D
    • Easing
    • Visibility (Opacity can be used instead if you prefer)

Easing and 3D features are new to Silverlight 3 but really give it a nice effect. The easing makes it start slowly, then appear faster at the 90 degree turn, and then ease out.

Jesse Liberty has three great posts in which he explains about some new things in Silverlight 3 - Validation, Based-on Styles and Perspective Transforms.

In addition to the transforms that were available in Silverlight 2 (translate, skew, etc.) you can now apply perspective transforms to any Silverlight Element to create 3D images and animation.

We have a two part video on how to do this on Silverlight/Learn.

  • Silverlight 3 Beta TrackballBehavior

Cristian Merighi has posted about Perspective 3D and Trackball Behavior.

Silverlight 3 Beta brings along, as we all know, many new possibilities in terms of graphics rendering and assets' management if compared with its previous version. With this article I aim to describe a couple of these brand new features and, at the same time, to provide some "useful" code (at least I'll try).

Terence Tsang brings to you a 3D Image Slideshow using the perspective 3d technology in both Flash and Silverlight.

Implementing this effect in the past is not that easy. However, thanks for the advancement of the technology, you may now create it on the fly.

Images used inside the applications are all collected from Pencake Ecard Website.

Fons Sonnemans has created a simple rotating clock with the help of Silverlight 3.

It uses Databinding, Animation and the new Projection property of UI Elements to apply 3D Transformations. You will have to install the Developer Runtime first before you can see it!

  • Perspective 3D Screen flip with PlaneProjection

Joel Neubeck will show you how to use perspective 3D to take 2D objects and rotate them in 3D space.

Almost a year ago I created a Silverlight 2 example that demonstrated how you could use a procedural animation to duplicate one of the transitions used on the iPhone. When a iPhone user goes to make a phone call, if you choose to display the keypad there is a cool 3D flip that occurs. Back in SL2 it was a pretty lengthy animation that never quite duplicated the correct amount of 3d perspective needed to make the flip look realistic.

Sam from the Silverlight SDK team suggests you to check out the new beta MSDN Silverlight 3D Effects Overview.

Yes, there are images, code, and running samples in the overview which is obviously a must when trying to explain 3D.

Terence Tsang has made his first comparison between Flash 10 and Silverlight 3 Beta which is about the capabilities of 3D rendering.

There are all together 4 comparisons:

    1. Perspective 3D on an image with drop shadow effect.
    2. Perspective 3D on various kind of controls.
    3. Perspective 3D on video.
    4. Perspective 3D stress test by rendering 100 images at the same time.

Joe Stegman posted the source to the WriteableBitmap and Pixel Shader sample that he showed at Mix 2009. He also published a sample that uses WriteableBitmap to take a "snapshot" of the running video to make a thumbnail and the Perspective3D demo.
